Aleksandra Śląska
A severe and majestic blonde, created as if for roles of commanding and determined women.
Her debut was the supporting – but still important and distinctive – role of Oberaufseherin in Wanda Jakubowska’s Ostatni Etap/The Last Stage. A similar role she created much later in Munk’s unfinished Pasażerka/The Passenger.
Even if she played beauties, they were always dramatic roles; like in Ford’s Piątka z ulicy Barskiej/Five from Barska Street, or Has’s Pętla/The Noose, where she plays the fiancée of Kuba – who keeps sinking deeper into his alcohol addiction. In historic films, dramas set during the occupation, and small, modern stories – like in Rybkowski’s Spotkanie w Bajce/Café from the Past, where she starred alongside Gustaw Holoubek and Andrzej Łapicki – she always created complicated characters, that were emotionally rich yet ambiguous.
She will always be remembered by the audiences for her phenomenal dubbing of Glenda Jackson in the role of Queen Elizabeth in a series for the BBC.
