Barbara Kwiatkowska
Gorgeous Ewa in Tadeusz Chmielewski’s debut film, she herself was a debutante who won a competition against thousands of candidates. Full of charm and naivety, which could bring on dangerous situations, were her heroines – like Iwona in Pan Anatol szuka miliona /Anatol Seeks a Million, Sabinka in Żołnierz królowej Madagaskaru/The Soldier of the Queen of Madagascar… But she could also be mysterious and inscrutable, like Jowita for Morgenstern’s film of the same name.
Her exceptional beauty was appreciated not only by Roman Polański (her first husband) but also by other, well-known directors. She was cast alongside Jean-Louis Trintignant and Alain Delon and her filmography includes more foreign than Polish titles. After leaving the country in 1959 she played in Italy, France and Germany. She worked with radio Free Europe and campaigned for positive Polish-German relations. She played her last roles at the beginning of the 90s dying suddenly at the age of 54.
