Jerzy Duszyński
The war robbed him of an opportunity to make his debut in Hania by Józef Lejtes. Another film, Dwie godziny [Two hours] by Stanisław Wohl and Józef Wyszomirski (1946), where he and Danuta Szaflarska played a couple returning from the war and trying to build their world from the ruins, was not released until 1957, when his performance could no longer move audiences.
But even without all that, Duszyński became the first Polish post-war heartthrob, thanks to his roles in Zakazane piosenki/Forbidden Songs and Skarb/The Treasure by Leonard Buczkowski. He also gave a strong performance in Jan Rybkowski’s film Autobus odjeżdża 6.20/The Bus Leaves at 6.20, co-starring Aleksandra Śląska. The audience also loved the stylish writer Stanisław Olszowski in Awantura o Basię/Argument About Basia, based on the novel by Kornel Makuszyński.
He was a theatre actor (working in Vilnius, Bialystok, and Warsaw), although later in his career, he played supporting roles and cameo roles in films. He played Pilsudski in Kawalerowicz’s film, and Hans Frank in Łomnicki’s production. Audiences remembered his daring portrayal of the uncompromising customer in Co mi zrobisz, jak mnie złapiesz by Stanisław Bareja.
He also starred in several television series, TV theatre plays, and the cult Hydrozagadka/Hydro Puzzle.
He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Rebirth of Polish and the Gold Cross of Merit.
