Stanisława Celińska

She displayed her talent in her debut role as Nina in Andrzej Wajda’s Krajobraz po bitwie /Landscape after the Battle, where she created a complicated character, gradually showing her inner warmth and sensitivity. Just as interesting even if less dramatic, was her role of Agnieszka Niechcic in Antczak’s Noce i dnie/Nights and Days.

A countess for Marczewski, one of the girls from Wilko for Wajda, she returned in characteristic roles that were often simple, well lived-in women.

He characters are usually warm and wise but she isn’t afraid of playing monsters either: ones who believe they are right, trusting in only one truth, and lacking in empathy. Even then, when played by Celińska, these characters retain a bit of humanity in them and are rarely one-dimensional. Perhaps that is why even her supporting roles (like the role of the General’s house-keeper in Wajda’s Katyń) are remembered well.
