About the film

Political comedy of manners inspired by the director’s own childhood.

Warsaw, early 1950s. Ten-year-old Hubert, son of a Home Army soldier who stayed in England, is sent by his mother from the countryside, where he lives, to his foster aunt in Warsaw. Idalia is a peculiar woman: she works at the post office, but her passion, which she is trying to instil in Hubert, is horseback riding. As an anti-communist, she uses her hobby to manifest her connection to the Polish pre-1939 tradition. At the same time, she maintains good relations with party dignitaries, believing that you need to enter the nest of the enemy.

Hubert, raised by his mother in an atmosphere of honesty and truth, cannot understand his aunt’s actions. The boy is at risk of expulsion from school because of an incident at the school academy after the death of Stalin, but the aunt settles the matter with the minister. In a gesture of protest, Hubert decides to run away with his friend Dominik to England − to his father. Eventually, Dominik undertakes the kayaking trip to Bornholm on his own and Hubert wins a fox hunting competition. During the next horse ride, the riders trespass into a military training area. Idalia is arrested. This time, her acquaintance with the marshal becomes useful, but the price of freedom is a move to the countryside.
