About the film
The closure of the cabaret means that Teresa and her friends are left without work. So is Linka, who is in love with the owner of the cabaret, yet, he has no intention to marry her. Teresa, Linka and several of their friends travel to a provincial town. The ballet master of the local theatre is Professor Dubienko − an old, unhappy man who is seeking oblivion in alcohol. His dancing is not appreciated by the local audience, while the girls enjoy a great success. Linka, however, can no longer perform. She is pregnant. Having no other choice, she decides to terminate it. Meanwhile, the theatre goes bankrupt. Teresa returns to Warsaw, where she begins to perform at a nightclub. She gains popularity, especially since her beloved, Zygmunt, is a famous cabaret singer. Linka’s former lover blackmails Teresa, forcing her to testify that Linka had an abortion. Linka’s last hopes for a marriage are shattered. Just as Teresa and Zygmunt achieve great success performing together on stage, Linka commits suicide. Teresa, tormented by remorse, wants to follow her suit. At the last minute Zygmunt rescues her. A close up of the name card on the door of their shared apartment ends the film.
