About the film

The girls of Nowolipki, a district of poor and common folk who are all close to one another, yet each of them are different.

Bronka cannot cope with the death of her father- a drunkard. She has to look for a job. She misses her lover who is fighting in the Legions, but she loses her battle with life and faces her beloved, broken and unworthy of his love; she is seduced by her father’s former client, the rich Różycki... Franka dreams of fame, the theatre and literature. What awaits her is a hard struggle, full of bitterness and disappointment. Gradually, she has no illusions left and eventually commits suicide... Anielka seeks luxury and wealth. She is beautiful and it seems that she will get what she wants. She forgets, however, that everything has its price. She gets pregnant and marries a man who is not the one she loves. Kwiryna has become part of Nowolipki, she is firmly rooted here. She works steadily, holding tightly on to the shop she inherited from her murdered parents. Her love is strong and persistent. She is waiting for her boy, who is in German captivity, and looks to the future with hope... They know how to fight, those girls of Nowolipki. They have been through more than enough. They did not break, however, they did not fall; they were only made stronger in their struggle for the better world that they had always dreamed of.
