Elżbieta Czyżewska
Her first important role was in Tadeusz Konwicki’s Zaduszki [‘All Souls’ Day’]. After that came others: comedy roles for Chmielewski, Bareja, Lenartowicz, and dramatic roles for Has, Skolimowski, Nasfeter. Gifted with a characteristic voice, she seduced with her girlish charms. She showed her tougher side in Wajda’s Wszystko na sprzedaż/Everything for Sale, playing Ela − the wife of a missing actor – in a film in which fiction gets mixed up with reality. She played herself/not herself, shouting her own/not her own dilemmas at the camera.
Her career in Poland, where in the 60s she was one of the most popular actresses, was cut short. After March 1968 she followed her husband, a correspondent for the American press, to the USA where her foreign career included over a dozen films. She reappeared for a very short time on the Polish screen during the post-Solidarity era, and from the end of the 80’s on, she played a few guest roles.
She died in New York on 17th June 2010.
